Edelfelt Star of Finland's Biggest Auction

Three paintings by Albert Edelfelt were among the highlights of the first day of Finland's biggest-ever auction.

On offer during Bukowski-Hörhammer's weekend auction in Helsinki are a record 1100 items. Their asking prices total 6.7 million euros, also a record in the country.

The most valuable Edelfelt painting sold on Saturday was "Strawberries" from 1890. The work went for 360,000 euros, well below its asking price of 400,000. All three Edelfelt works went to Finnish buyers.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of Edelfelt's birth; next year will be the centenary of his death.

Bukowski's International 25th Anniversary Auction continues at Finlandia Hall on Sunday with antiques and design.
