Finland to Halt TB Vaccinations

Finland is to halt tuberculosis vaccinations. Inoculations of newborn babies will be phased out over the next five years, says the National Public Health Institute.

Those in risk groups will still receive vaccinations. The incidence of TB has been steadily declining in Finland. Last year there were 235 cases.

A panel of vaccination experts will make a final decision in September, reports the Vaasa-based newspaper Pohjalainen.

The decision is aimed at avoiding possible complications from the shot. Finland is one of the few Western countries that still vaccinates babies against TB. For instance, neighbouring Sweden ended the practice 30 years ago.
