Nightwish Fires Superstar Lead Singer

One of Finland's most successful music groups, internationally acclaimed heavy-metal band Nightwish, has shocked fans by suddenly firing lead singer Tarja Turunen.

After their recent world tour's final concert in Helsinki, the band members presented Turunen with a letter explaining why they no longer wanted to work with her. This letter has also been published in English on the band's official website.

The band members accuse Turunen of greed, diva antics, and contempt for her fans as well as the other band members. They say she demanded more money from concerts and refused to participate in rehearsals or song arrangements.

"The ultimate example being the already sold-out show in Oslo, which you wanted to cancel because you needed to rehearse for your solo concerts, meet friends and go to the movies," states the letter.

Turunen, whose looks and operatic voice helped propel the band to superstardom, says she is shocked at the way she was dismissed.

"I'm really upset. The way in which this was brought up publicly is cruel and sad," Turunen told YLE. "It wasn't enough that the letter talked about me, but the way in which my husband was also dragged into it is shocking."

She added that she will give her side of the story in a press conference sometime in November. Turunen, who studied classical singing at the Music University of Karlsruhe, Germany, has already launched a solo career.
