Cross-Border Eco-Tourism Venture Launched

The state forest management agency Metsähallitus has started a cooperative venture to advance nature conservation and eco-tourism in Lapland, including northern parts of Finland, Norway and Russia.

The main goal of the project is to protect biodiversity and encourage tourism with a low environmental impact in the Inari-Pasvik area, which encompasses parts of the three countries.

The two-year venture is also aimed at providing training and improving cooperation among state and local officials, tour operators, local residents and others.

The nature protection measures planned include harmonising the monitoring of bear and golden eagle populations in the three national areas.

The municipality of Inari and the Lapland Regional Environment Centre are also taking part in the project, which is mostly funded by the EU.
