Check-in system fault delays Finnair flights

Dozens of flights by the national carrier Finnair were delayed on Monday evening due to a fault in the Amadeus check-in system that appeared at about 4:30pm. The glitch started clearing up at about 6pm on Monday, but delays are expected to continue on Tuesday.

Finnair’s air traffic halted almost completely for a time on Monday because of a failure within the international check-in system. Flights were running up to three hours late, according to Finnair's Communications Director Antti Miettinen.

Sorting out the backlog of flights will lead to further delays on Tuesday.

“Of Tuesday’s upcoming Asian flights half will be delayed by about an hour,” Miettinen estimated.

Some flights could take off on Monday when the check-in system was used manually. The glitch also delayed arriving flights.

Finnair’s Senior Vice President for Operations, Ville Iho, told YLE that about 50 flights were facing delays on Monday evening.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport says that flights operated by other airlines have been on time.

Many airlines use the Amadeus system. British Airways and Air Berlin have announced that the glitch is also affecting their operations. Finnair is the only airline using this system in Finland.
