Pig farm activists face damages of 175,000 euros

Four animal rights activists are facing charges of aggravated defamation over secret filming at pig farms in 2009. The total sum of compensation claims runs to 175,000 euros.

Animal rights activists videotaped conditions at 30 pig farms in various parts of Finland. The footage sparked a public outcry and provoked much debate.

Ten pig farms are demanding compensation for mental suffering and production losses to the tune of 175,000 euros.

Trial proceedings in the case started on Tuesday at a district court in Salo. The accused deny all charges.
