Finns among stranded Everest trekkers

Around a dozen Finnish hikers are among the 2,500 trekkers stranded in the foothills of Mount Everest since Wednesday. Thick fog has cancelled flights in and out of the area.

Fog has shut down Nepal’s Lukla Airport, which usually serves some 500 passengers daily. The small town of Lukla is a gateway for trekkers heading to Everest and surrounding mountains.

Helicopters have been brought in to transport trekkers out of the area. However competition for helicopter seats is stiff.

Lukla is located some 135 kilometres northeast of Kathmandu.
