About half of young adults who are unable to work suffer from a mental health problem. Around one fifth have some sort of mental disability.

Annamari Tuulio-Henriksson, a researcher at the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela), says the situation is worrisome. She says that collecting disability pension due to depression is a rather new phenomenon. However there is little information on the subject.

She adds that there is not one particular reason for the development. Some of the problems could be due to childhood. Parents’ mental and drug problems often result in difficulties for their children.
