Survey: More Young Finns Face Depression

Well-being among the majority of Finland's youths is improving; however, one fifth are faring worse. New figures by Allianssi, an umbrella organisation for Finnish youth organisations, show that the number of marginalised teens is growing.

The group also points to a sharp rise in the number of young adults collecting disability pension for depression.

Allianssi's figures show that the economic downturn has worsened living conditions for many youth.

"Over the past couple of years, past improvements in many of the areas measured by this study have either slowed, stopped or even reversed," the group's chair, Hanna-Mari Manninen, told YLE. "These include things such as homelessness, credit problems and increased alcohol consumption. These may have many causes, including the recession."
