Many elementary schools also begin classes this week, although some pupils will not start school until next week. This year the school term lasts 189 days.

Meanwhile, polytechnics and many adult high schools begin classes in August or September.

Municipalities determine when schools start. They also decide on holidays. For example, autumn break ranges from two days to a week. In Helsinki and Turku, students enjoy two days off in the fall. In Tampere and Lapland, pupils are off for a week in October.
