The national day doodle centres on the Finnish flag plunged in a snowy rural landscape complete with a rabbit and cross-country skier.

Other Finnish doodles this year included one marking the spring equinox (March 20), featuring designs by fashion house Marimekko, and Elias Lönnrot's 210th birthday (April 9). The Lönnrot-inspired doodle portrayed him on his travels around Karelia during which the physician collected poems and folklore that he eventually compiled to form the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala.

Doodles commemorate holidays and special occasions. According to the company, the selection process aims to celebrate interesting events and anniversaries. Google has published special variations of its logo since 1998.
