Thursday night’s extreme cold set new temperature records across Finland. According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute record low temperatures were recorded in Uusimaa, southern Karelia and the Häme region.
Temperatures in Konnunsuo in Lappeenranta, south Karelia, plunged down to -32.5 degrees Celsius, while glacial readings as low as -29.3 degrees benumbed householders in Maasoja in Vihti, Uusimaa. Residents of Evo in Hämeenlinna meanwhile, only had to struggle with temperatures reaching -28 degrees Celsius.
These local records did not, however, break this winter’s unprecedented low of -34.7, measured in Kiutaköngäs, in Kuusamo last December.
Meteorological authorities have issued a cold warning and are advising persons susceptible to extreme cold in southern and central Finland to avoid prolonged exposure due to the health risk.
