As of August, the 3B will simply be known as the number 3 line while the 3T is being rechristened as tram number 2.
Both trams have travelled between Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto and Eläintarha districts, with the 3B passing through Eira and Kallio and the 3T cruising via Töölö and Kamppi.
The lines form a figure-eight circle running in opposite directions. The letters were added in 1951 to help people discern the trams' direction. Transport authorities soon realised that the letters tacked on to the tram number were bewildering commuters, but it took over 60 years to make a change.
