Nightwish mastermind makes music for Scrooge McDuck

Tuomas Holopainen, the lead songwriter for Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, is working on his first solo album. The work is a soundtrack, not of a movie, but of a comic book by Disney artist Don Rosa.

Co-founder of the acclaimed metal band Nightwish Tuomas Holopainen is finalizing a very different kind of solo album. He says that for years, ever since the band's international breakthrough, he's wanted to do a composition inspired by the work of comic book writer and illustrator Don Rosa and in particular, "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck".

Since starting, Holopainen has been joined in the project on several occasions by Rosa, who has created the album cover and is illustrating a music video.

Holopainen has not yet released any of the music, but Don Rosa, who himself collects movie soundtracks, says he's moved by what he's heard.

“Somebody writing a movie soundtrack to go along with one of my comicbook stories is an incredible thrill that I never expected would happen, but apparently it has,” Rosa said, continuing: “He played a lot of it for me last night, and even though he told me it’s not yet mixed, which he explained means it’s not yet finished, it sounded glorious. I wept.”

Once the Scrooge McDuck album is finished in about a month, Tuomas Holopainen will be redirecting his focus to Nightwish and the band's next album that is expected to be recorded next summer.
