The most popular smartphones often operate at speeds markedly slower than those advertised by telecoms operators, new data has found.
Results published in the daily Helsingin Sanomat, based on tests by researchers at Aalto University, show that the fastest network in urban areas is provided by phone operator DNA. Elisa and Sonera were found to be a better choice for users in more sparsely populated parts of the country.
On average, however, Elisa was found to be Finland’s fastest and most reliable network.
The team at Aalto University’s Department of Communications and Networking also studied data transfer speeds for the most popular smartphones.
Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and S III models were discovered to be the fastest, hitting loading speeds of almost 100 megabits per second. Apple’s iPhone 5 was ranked third in the speed test, while the Nokia Lumia 920 came in fourth, registering speeds only half as fast as those of the Samsung phones.
