A 68-year-old man has been killed by a lightning strike on a golf course in Joroinen, southwest Savonia. The golf course CEO, Petteri Ruuskanen, said that the thunder front in question was not sizeable, but rose up quickly.
“The golf party was just leaving the course when the lightning bolt struck,” Ruuskanen said.
The four-person group was walking back to the club house 400 metres away at the time of the fatal strike. Ruuskanen said that the tragic event occurred at 3.45pm. The lightning bolt struck the metallic golf cart that the man was holding onto. The man perished immediately.
Emotions at the Joroinen golf course ran understandably high.
“The course was full of people at the time,” Ruuskanen recounts.
The golf course has now been closed, but it may reopen in the evening. Police are investigating the specific cause of death.
The daily Ilta-Sanomat was the first to report the story.
