Stubb to CNN: Russia may face more EU sanctions

Prime Minister Alexander Stubb told the US-based news channel CNN Friday that the EU may impose more sanctions against Russia if that country does not change its policy of support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Stubb said Russia broke international law when it annexed Crimea. He added that while the situation has not yet developed to the point that even more sanctions are being imposed, that will happen if Russia continues to support the separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Stubb stressed that EU sanctions are an extension of foreign policy, not a question of a trade war.

Fact finding

Speaking to Yle, Prime Minister Stubb characterized Friday's talks between President Sauli Niinistö and Vladimir Putin, and discussion scheduled Saturday in Kiev between Niinistö and Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko as "fact finding".

"Every discussion contact is a step forward. This is good old-fashioned diplomacy, which is needed on both sides," Stubb told Yle.

However, Stubb added that President Niinistö is not carrying any official message to Ukraine.
