Yle news journalist Erkka Mikkonen reported from Kiev that at the start of the talks, President Poroshenko said that Finland and Ukraine are joined together by shared European values.
Both presidents expressed concern over the fact that the Ukrainian situation has worsened since the two last met in June.
Poroshenko emphasized that it is important to prevent Russian forces from crossing the border into Ukraine. In addition, he expressed satisfaction that the International Red Cross is involved in settling the dispute over a Russian aid convoy in the east.
For his part, President Niinistö said that Finland is prepared to help in finding a solution to the situation in Ukraine.
