Olkiluoto 2 stays offline for another week

A leakage was detected in Olkiluoto nuclear power plant’s number-two reactor on Wednesday, and the unit was detached from the national grid.

The plant’s owner Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) now estimates that the second nuclear power unit will be up and running again on Monday in one week’s time. TVO had originally estimated that the 880-megawatt Olkiluoto 2 would stay offline at least until the past Saturday.

The generator in Olkiluoto 2 began to collect condensation on Wednesday, and electricity production was discontinued in order to locate the fault.

After consulting experts from TVO and the generator supplier, the power company has decided to replace a rotor in the generator.

The power company says there is no risk to nuclear safety, and that the Olkiluoto 1 reactor continues to function normally.
