Police who suspect that their colleagues are engaged in criminal activity or any kind of wrongdoing will soon be able to file an anonymous tip, according to the regional daily Keskisuomalainen.
The system, which is being termed an "internal monitoring channel", will be trialled by the Helsinki police department and the National Bureau of Investigation this year, before being rolled out across the country next year.
During the first stage of the pilot, all tips will go directly to the National Police Board. Suspicions concerning minor infractions will be dealt with by the legal unit of local police departments. However possible criminal offences will be handed over to the Office of the Prosecutor General.
Rank and file police officers have given the pilot a lukewarm response. First vice chair of the Finnish Police Federation Kimmo Laajavuori said that the need for such a system will weaken camaraderie among officers.
