Finland's Office of the Prosecutor General says it will soon complete its investigation of the actions of several former bosses at the Helsinki police department between 2008 and 2013. The probe began after former Helsinki narcotics cop Jari Aarnio was convicted of drug dealing and official misconduct and separately sentenced for those crimes.
The prosecutor's office said that it has prepared some 6,000 pages of documents related to the investigation.
The prosecutor said that there is reason to suspect the officers neglected to register names of people they used as sources of information during their investigations. According to the law, the names of people who give police information must be appropriately entered in a database.
The investigation examined the actions of former National Police Commissioner Mikko Paatero as well as Lasse Aapio, Helsinki police's current chief, and Jukka Riikonen, a former Helsinki police commander, among others.
This investigation was sparked by revelations made during an investigation of Aarnio, Helsinki's former drug squad chief, who is also a suspect in the current case, according to the prosecutor's office.
Aarnio was convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for a raft of drug-related and official misconduct offences in December of last year.
All of the suspects have denied that they committed crimes, the office wrote in a press release issued on Wednesday.
