The two men who stabbed themselves outside Parliament on Friday were released on Saturday, police announce. Police confirm that both men – born in 1995 and 1998 – are asylum seekers; their nationalities have not been divulged.
Head of investigation Kirsi Kanth from the Helsinki Police says that the display of self-harm was intended as a protest against Finland's asylum process.
No bystanders were injured or endangered during the incident. Police say they have notified the Finnish Immigration Authority of the incident, and that the situation is being assessed.
