The commissioning of the third nuclear reactor at Olkiluoto has been delayed once again. Teollisuuden Voima (TVO), the plant's operator, announced on Friday that the reactor will be fully operational by February 6 at the earliest.

Previously, regular energy production was scheduled for January of next year, and prior to that TVO had set dates of January 2022, July, September and before the end of this year.

According to TVO's press release, the trial operation of the third reactor will be able to continue on 25 December at the earliest.

However, Friday's press statement noted that there are still uncertainties in the schedule.

More detailed investigations into the root cause of the damage in the feedwater pumps of the Olkiluoto 3 turbine are still ongoing. After the investigations reach a conclusion, a decision will be made on when to turn on the facility.

TVO said that it will provide further information on any possible schedule delays as a result of the investigation.

The commissioning of Olkiluoto 3 is of great significance for Finland's electricity self-sufficiency. If the power plant can be operational during winter, it can also lower the price of electricity.

Olkiluoto 3 has become notorious due to the length and number of delays, as the reactor was originally slated for completion in 2009.

The most recent problems began in October when cracks were found in the reactor's feed water pumps. According to TVO, the company that supplied the feedwater pumps is a reputable firm in the field and has outfitted several nuclear plants in the past.
