Police in Helsinki have detained Mika Moring on suspicion of killing two women, but believe he may also have been involved in numerous other sexual offences and assaults.

In a statement released on Friday, police said the two suspected homicide victims disappeared in 2019 and 2022 respectively, but their bodies have not yet been found.

Investigating officers have taken the unusual step of releasing the 51-year-old suspect's name and photograph, as well as pictures of his car, as they require assistance from the general public and deem this necessary to help solve the crimes and establish if there are any more victims.

Yle has also decided to identify the suspect for the same reasons.

Two suspected homicides

Helsinki District Court remanded Moring into custody at a hearing last Friday, as he has been suspected of involvement in the disappearance of a woman missing since August.

Police in Helsinki first requested the public's assistance in helping to locate Katja Miinalainen on 5 October, saying at the time that she had last been seen on 14 August getting into Moring's car in the Kiikala district of Salo.

The pair then travelled to Tammela in Central Finland and on to Finnish Lapland, where police believe they camped in remote areas.

Katja Miinalainen is described as 165 centimetres tall and weighs about 50 kilos. She has long, dark, straight hair, blue eyes and she may be missing a tooth from the top front or left corner of her mouth.

Meanwhile, police in the east of Finland believe that Moring may also be connected to the disappearance of a 35-year-old woman who went missing in 2019.

Saara Arva was last seen in the Vesanto municipality of North Savo in August of that year.

Police: There may be more victims

Investigating officers believe that Moring may have picked up several women in his car at different times and in different parts of Finland, and that he may have physically or sexually assaulted them.

"We believe that there have been more victims over the years than the police are currently aware of. It is very important that we reach other possible victims," lead Investigator Mari Päivärinta said in the police statement, adding that the suspect took the women on camping trips in various parts of the country.

Police have asked eyewitnesses, victims or anyone with any relevant information to contact them via the email address vakivaltavihjeet.helsinki@poliisi.fi or by calling 0295 476 147.
