Finland's former prime minister Jyrki Katainen has been named head of the Nordea Group's public affairs unit, the financial institute announced in a press release on Thursday.

The 51-year-old former leader of the National Coalition Party is currently president of the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, but will leave that role to take up the position with Nordea in October.

In addition to his term as Finnish Prime Minister from 2011 to 2014, Katainen also previously served as EU Commissioner between 2014 and 2019.

"I am looking forward to joining Nordea and the opportunity to continue working on the key trends and developments affecting our societies. Nordea is the leading bank in the Nordic region, helping its customers and Nordic societies to move towards a more sustainable future," Katainen said in the press release announcing his appointment.
