Police in Eastern Finland are investigating the death of a 4-year-old child as murder, the law enforcement agency announced.
Police and rescue units were called to an apartment in the city of Joensuu's Rantakylä district on Thursday morning, where they found the lifeless body of a 4-year-old child.
In a press release issued on Friday morning, police said the child had a considerable amount of visible external injuries. Based on those injuries, police said the death was suspected to have been caused by external factors.
Police said the child's mother and stepfather, who were both at the residence, were both detained.
Authorities requested an order from Northern Karelia District Court to hold the couple in remand custody as suspects in the child's killing on 7 and 8 June.
The court is scheduled to make that decision on Friday afternoon. The female suspect is 21 years old and the male suspect is 25.
Police said more information about the investigation would be announced at the end of next week at the earliest.
