Rain is lashing many parts of Finland on Monday, with the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) warning of potentially dangerous rain and wind in southern, central and eastern parts of the country.

Gusts may reach 15 metres per second, particularly in the east, the FMI noted.

FMI meteorologist Sini Jääskeläinen said the heavy rains may create the most problems in central and southern parts of the country.

"It's likely that the daily rainfall could exceed 50 millimeters," she said.

Yle meteorologist Matti Huutonen explained that in Helsinki this amount of rain basically means all of August's rain coming down in one day.

Most of the rain will be concentarted north of Uusimaa and in the southwest. Kari Ursin of Helsinki's rescue services said the department was monitoring the situation and would respond if necessary.

Up north, conditions are less severe, with the weather overcast but dry.
