Juha Wihersaari has resigned from his position as special advisor to Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne (Finns), the farmers' union newspaper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus (MT) has reported.

Ranne confirmed to MT that Wihersaari had submitted his resignation, but denied there was anything "dramatic" about the reasons behind the decision.

The paper noted that Wihersaari was only appointed to the role at the beginning of last month, and had responsibility for cyber security and combatting hybrid threats at the ministry.

Minister Ranne's choice for the role of State Secretary also made headlines recently, when the appointment of Kari Ilkkala was rejected after a security check by Finland's Security Intelligence Police, Supo.

Ilkkala had until then been serving as Ranne's parliamentary advisor, but resigned from his position soon afterwards.

Finance Minister and Finns Party leader Riikka Purra also had an appointment fall through following a background check by Supo. Her attempt to appoint journalist Jari Kuikanmäki as her media relations advisor ran aground at the end of last month.
