Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (NCP) will discuss the damage to a gas pipeline and telecoms cable between Finland and Estonia during a two-day meeting of Nato defence ministers in Brussels that began on Wednesday.
Yle has learned that Finland and Estonia will raise the issue at the ministers meeting, and brief colleagues on what is known about the incident.
Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg commented briefly on the pipeline and cable breaks before the meeting began on Wednesday morning.
"If this is proven to be a deliberate attack on Nato critical infrastructure, it will of course be serious, but it will also be met by a united and determined response from Nato," he said.
The suspected pipeline sabotage is the first time that Finland's sovereignty has been violated since the country joined Nato last spring, Yle's Nato correspondent notes.
According to Yle sources, ambassadors from the Nato countries discussed the matter at the Nato Council behind closed doors on Tuesday. A diplomatic source told Yle that the matter is being "taken seriously."
On Tuesday afternoon, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said that he had discussed the matter with Stoltenberg, who assured him that "Nato is ready to assist in the investigations".
"A world growing increasingly unstable and dangerous"
Previously announced topics on the agenda include the strengthening of deterrence and defence, Nato's operations and support for Ukraine, whose president, Volodymyr Zelensky, addresses the meeting on Wednesday.
"In a world growing increasingly unstable and dangerous, meetings among allies and close partners become ever more important," Häkkänen was quoted as saying in a Defence Ministry handout ahead of the meeting.
Sweden, whose Nato membership application is still being held up by Hungary and Turkey, will take part in the meeting on Thursday.
"It is of paramount importance for the security of our alliance that we finalise Sweden's accession to Nato," Häkkänen said.
On Wednesday, Häkkänen is to attend a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, followed by meetings of the defence ministers' Northern Group and the German-led Framework Nation Concept on Thursday.
Among other issues, the Northern Group ministers are to discuss protection of critical national infrastructure. Besides the Nordic and Baltic countries, the group includes Germany, Poland, the Netherlands and Britain.
Häkkänen is also scheduled to hold one-on-one talks with his opposite numbers from Spain, Canada, Denmark and Lithuania.
Valtonen postpones US trip
Meanwhile Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) has put off a visit to Washington that was scheduled for 12 October.
Valtonen was to have met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. According to the ministry, the visit has been "postponed due to changes to the ministers' schedules."
The US State Department said that Blinken is leaving on Wednesday for a three-day trip to Israel and Jordan.
During her visit to Washington, Valtonen was also to meet with representatives of various government agencies and think tanks, and give a speech at the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank.
