Gutsy Animations from Finland will produce a new animated Moominvalley series. Yle is part of the project as joint producer and the first buyer of the series.

Internationally renowned stars Kate Winslet, Taron Egerton, Rosamund Pike and Matt Berry, among others, will give their voice to the Moomin characters in the English version of the new Moominvalley series. Music for the series, which will be distributed to wide international audiences, will be written by Finnish composers and musicians Pekka Kuusisto and Samuli Kosminen.

The Finnish production company Gutsy Animations released information about the cast of the new series. The animation is being developed in association with Yle Drama. Moomin Characters Oy Ltd, established by Tove and Lars Jansson to manage the Moomin brand, supports the production of the series.

Yle will broadcast the new Moominvalley series in Finnish and Swedish from spring 2019. The Finnish actors will be chosen later.

The Moomin brand, created by novelist, painter, illustrator and comic book artist Tove Jansson, is one of Finland's biggest cultural exports. The original books have been translated into over 50 languages, and the previous animated series has been widely broadcast around the world.

In the English version, Taron Egerton takes on the role of the much-loved Moomintroll, Rosamund Pike will be the wise and caring Moominmamma, and Matt Berry will play the adventurous and knowledgeable Moominpappa. Kate Winslet will become Mrs Fillyjonk.

“We are thrilled with this stellar cast who have been carefully chosen to inhabit Tove Jansson’s much-loved characters. They will speak to audiences young and old and for the family drama that we are creating, which doesn’t shy away from the depth and complexities of Jansson’s original work, they couldn’t be a more talented or suitable line up. The cast of Finnish actors will be announced next spring. We will produce versions in Finnish and Finland Swedish”, says Creative Director and Executive Producer Marika Makaroff from Gutsy Animations.

The Moominvalley series is being made using the latest 2D/3D technology, where characters are rendered in 3D in an environment with some 2D illustrative or painterly elements.

The pioneering animated series is being produced by a highly professional team including Oscar-winning director Steve Box, BAFTA-winning producer John Woolley, and Emmy-winning writers Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler.

Music for the series will be composed by classical violinist Pekka Kuusisto and percussionist Samuli Kosminen. Kuusisto’s father Ilkka Kuusisto composed and wrote Moomin Opera for the Finnish National Opera in 1974 together with Tove Jansson.

The year 2017 has seen the emergence of several Moomin events and displays in the UK, including Southbank Centre’s immersive Adventures in Moominland and Kew Gardens’ Easter Festival. The UK will also have its first large-scale exhibition of work by Tove Jansson at Dulwich Picture Gallery, including Moomin drawings, paintings from the 1930s, abstract works from the 1960s, and satirical anti-war cartoons and book jacket designs. The Moomins will also feature prominently at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival.
