Introduction to Yle’s technology vision
The purpose of the technology vision is to set out guidelines for technological development at Yle. However, it is important to understand that this is not a route map for the future but rather a compass that needs continuous updating to ensure that it provides up-to-date information for use in decision-making.
Yle’s technology policies were divided into four categories: invest, experiment, monitor and let go.
Invest
To help us make decisions and do prioritization, we have listed the technology areas that will be in our main focus for the moment being.
Experiment
As experimentation is the best way to learn, we will keep up with testing different technology areas. Both inhouse and outhouse e.g.together with start-ups.
Monitor
New and emerging technologies are shaping the media business. In this category, we will continuously keep an eye on upcoming technologies.
Let go
In a forward-looking approach we are also forced to keep track on what we need to get rid off in terms of technology.
We do need to transform the resources into new ones, to open up the possibilities to invest in new technologies.
Strategic capabilities enabling the implementation of the technology vision
The technology vision team has identified eleven strategic capabilities that enable implementing the vision.
Here, ‘capability’ refers to all the elements (methods, skills, tools, etc.) needed to implement a certain idea or task.
The strategic capabilities identified provide an outline for the development work at Yle, as well as for the required competencies.
The next step in the development of the identified capabilities is to specify the expertise and competencies required at a more detailed level.
