The baton of Frank Strobel conjures onto the screen three short Chaplin films of 1917—1918. A Dog’s Life and The Adventurer, with their lovable vagabonds, are familiar classics, but How To Make Movies was never screened in public because Chaplin kept it hidden in his private safe until his death. It is a tongue-in-cheek account of how he made his movies – and how an elegant film genius can transform himself into a ragged tramp.
