The premiere of Thomas Adès’ ballet in Los Angeles in 2019 was quite an event. The performance evoked a storm of applause even before it had ended. Inferno is Adès’ take on Dante’s Divine Comedy. Stravinsky was fascinated by the fight – and some may say wrestle – of music and dance. The myth-inspired ballet Orpheus was one of the fruits of his unique, more than 40-year partnership with choreographer George Balanchine.
