Thomas Adès is not only a composer and conductor; he is also a pianist. He has recorded works by Janáček for solo piano and widely conducts. His arrangements of four Purcell songs are a tribute to that composer’s handling of the English language in music. The words of the songs by both Purcell and Stravinsky are by Shakespeare. Those of the Elegy for JFK are by Auden, and the portrait by Kurtág is of Robert Schumann.
