Kaija Saariaho, György Ligeti and Maurice Ravel are or were all brilliant orchestrators. A commission from Saariaho’s long-standing partner-in-music Anu Komsi triggered a whole Song Cycle topped by the Saarikoski Songs finally completed during the pandemic lockdown.
Ligeti’s 1960s Lontano operates with approaching and receding blocks in a soundspace, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé with a dreamily sensual orchestral palette.
