The first party convention of Power Belongs to the People (VKK, or Valta Kuuluu Kansalle in Finnish) will take place on Saturday in the town of Mikkeli in eastern Finland.

VKK was founded by MP Ano Turtiainen last year after he was expelled from the Finns Party in February 2021.

A VKK press release noted that the party convention will "honour" the political treaty signed by Finland and Russia in January 1992 following the break-up of the Soviet Union.

The agreement was a replacement for the Agreement of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance signed in 1948, as Finland sought to break away from the terms of the pact.

A representative of the Russian Embassy in Helsinki has been invited to the convention. VKK is the only party in the Finnish Parliament that has fully opposed Finland's application to join Nato.

Turtiainen is the party's only MP. VKK won 10 seats in January's regional elections, but two of the elected councillors have since resigned from the party.
