Most Finns Don't Want Karelia Back from Russia

The vast majority of Finns don't want the return of the former Finnish territory of Karelia, according to a poll commissioned by Helsingin Sanomat.

Sixty-two percent of those polled had a strong aversion to the idea. They felt that rebuilding Karelia's economy and infrastructure would be too expensive.

Less than a third wanted the territory back. Those the most in favour of re-patriating the territory were young adults and teenagers, as well as people with family ties to Karelia. More than a thousand people over the age of 15 were surveyed for the poll.

The question of Karelia's return is only theoretical - neither the Finnish nor Russian governments have made any suggestion that this could happen.
