Finns heavy users of pirate sites

New figures indicate that the Finns are bigger users of sites offering access to unauthorized downloads of copyright materials than previously thought. The business daily Kauppalehti reported Friday that new statistics from the recording industry group IFPI ranks Finns as the third most active users of such sites within the EU.

Worldwide, only users in Brazil, the Netherlands and Spain are more active in using sites offering access to unauthorized downloads.

According to the IFPI, in May 35% of internet users in Finland used some sort of peer-to-peer network. In, for example, the UK and Germany that figure was around 20%.

Kauppalehti wrote that the popularity of unauthorized downloads has undermined the market for commercial services and slowed the development of legal alternatives.
