Medals Awarded to Divers who Helped in Tsunami Rescue

President Tarja Halonen has awarded medals to 24 people recognising their achievements in lifesaving. Included among the recipients were members of the Finnish Raya Divers scuba diving group who helped in rescue efforts in the Asian tsunami disaster area two years ago.

The lifesaving medal is granted as recognition for extremely courageous or resourceful action, or action involving a risk to one’s own life, resulting in the saving of another person’s life.

An award board considered 97 proposals for recipients, 17 of which it recommended for the recognition.

In addition, medals were proposed, exceptionally, to the Raya Divers group for their selfless activities in the tsunami area.
