President Niinistö: No solo Finnish role in Iceland airspace surveillance

President Sauli Niinistö says Finland will only take part in the Nato-led surveillance of Iceland's airspace if Sweden participates.

The President added an earlier statement from the Prime Minister had been misunderstood to believe Finland might participate alone.

Niinistö emphasized Finland will examine the possibilities to take part at its own pace but will only join in the mission if Sweden participates.

President Niinistö’s comments came after Thursday’s meeting of the government's committee on foreign and security policy.
