Opening hours

Alko stores are open on Thursday, New Year's Eve from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed all New Year's Day.

Banks are largely open until 1 p.m. on Thursday. The customer service points of the S Bank are open until 6 p.m. On New Year's Day banks will all be closed and will not open until Monday, January 4.

Post offices close their doors at 4 p.m., except the Helsinki central post which is open until 6 p.m. All post offices are closed on New Year's Day.

Most shops may be open today from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Note that opening hours restriction will be waived for shops and hairdressers starting on January 1, which means that establishments will get to choose their opening times themselves regardless of the day or the size of the shop.

The S Group says that a part of its shops will be open immediately on Friday, 1 January 2016. Nearly 200 stores will extend their opening hours on Saturday. More open signs will be seen in the next month, as 300 more shops lengthen their service hours.

Kesko's K-shops are run by individual entrepreneurs and so are allowed to decide on their own opening hours. Kesko suggests that customers check the hours of specific shops online.

Commuter traffic runs on altered schedules. Capital region traffic will mainly operate according to Friday schedules on New Year's Eve, not counting Espoo service lines. The wee hours of New Year's Day will feature additional runs in bus, metro and commuter train services. Traffic will run according to Sunday timetables on New Year's Day proper. For more information on Helsinki region public transport, see the HSL website (siirryt toiseen palveluun).

Long distance traffic timetables will run with some exceptions which can be found on the websites of the travel operators. Long-distance train schedules can be found on VR's homepage (siirryt toiseen palveluun).

Firework limitations

The use of fireworks is allowed on New Year's Eve from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Rescue Services have placed limitations on shooting rockets in various areas, especially central Helsinki. The list of places where fireworks are forbidden can be found here (siirryt toiseen palveluun) (in Finnish).
