Finnish science has been found to be of a high international standard, says a fresh survey by the Academy of Finland.
According to the study, there is a special focus on research, and most personnel involved in science are of a high professional standard.
Finnish research and development work was found to be the most extensive in OECD countries. About 70,000 people work in the field of science, corresponding to two percent of the labour force.
There has also been a considerable increase in international cooperation by Finnish scientists. for instance, cooperation between Finnish and other European scientists in biology and medicine increased by 50 percent from 1997 to 2001.
