Deal on Land Mine Ban

The Finnish government is reaching an agreement on anti-personnel landmines that could lead to signing the Ottawa Treaty in the year 2012.

The government's Foreign and Security Policy Committee will discuss the matter together with President Tarja Halonen next week.

An alternative system will require 300 million euros to finance, of which two-thirds must come from new funding. Additional funding would be staggered over a period of eight years.

The last of the mines would be destroyed by 2016.

Centre Party and SDP ministers have already discussed the timetable and financing of the deal. The government's Foreign and Security Policy Committee will discuss the matter together with President Tarja Halonen next week.
