Clean-Up After May Day

May Day revellers deposited a record amount of garbage in Helsinki. Streets and squares in the city centre have now been cleaned. However, the clean-up operation in parks will continue well into Sunday. Volunteers are assisting city employees in cleaning up the mess. Some 300 cubic metres of trash was deposited during May Day celebrations. Around 55 people are taking part in removing the piles of rubbish. Merry-makers left litter over a much wider area than in previous years particularly in the Koff and Kaisaniemi parks. The Kaivopuisto Park in the south of Helsinki was emptied of rubbish on Saturday.
