-34.1C in Lapland breaks winter’s cold record

The mercury hit -34.1 degrees Celsius on Sunday in Ylitornio, western Lapland, marking a new record low for this winter.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) said -30-degree weather is in store for much of Lapland in the coming days.

Salla in eastern Lapland held the previous cold record of -32.2 degrees Celsius measured on 3 January.

Yle meteorologist Matti Huutonen said the mercury will plunge across Finland as the week begins.

By Tuesday, thermometers in southern parts of the country will fall to -12C while northern areas will experience lows in the -25 to -30C range.
