Finnish author Paavo Haavikko died on Monday at the age of 77. He succumbed to a long illness at a Helsinki hospital.
Born on January 25th, 1931, Haavikko became a versatile poet and author, and a prolific commentator on social issues. Because of his outspoken and critical views he became known as a "national pessimist" of sorts.
He leaves behind him 70 literary works, which have been translated into 12 languages. In addition to poetry, he wrote prose, drama, opera librettos, as well as television and film scripts.
