Two staff members are charged with assault and other charges including deprivation of liberty, while the third is suspected of breach of official duties.
A fourth hospital employee had already been charged with similar offences in 2015 and 2016. The case goes to trial next Thursday at the district court of south-west Finland.
In February last year, Turun Sanomat daily reported that staff at the psychiatric unit had been abusing their patients for years. They reportedly assaulted patients and medicated them without their consent and also illegally put them in restraints.
Staff on the night shift would, according to TS, over-medicate their patients so that they could sleep. Those nurses routinely slept 4-6 hours on the night shift, which is strictly forbidden on psychiatric wards. In addition to the mistreatment of patients, TS reported that a large quantity of medication also disappeared from the unit.
