The joint annual Christmas fundraiser drive run by the Finnish Red Cross SPR and the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare MLL gathered a record 2.1 million euros in contributions in its 20th year.
The organisations used the donations to provide 70-euro grocery vouchers for 30,000 families in need of assistance. Last year, the seasonal charity campaign was able to help feed 22,000 families during the Christmas holiday.
Still not enough for all families in need
However while the number of families who received food assistance increased, the organisations say that not all of the families in need benefited from the programme.
Contributors to the Christmas Cheer campaign included large corporations and businesses as well as foundations and people who wanted to celebrate their December birthdays in a special way. This year saw an increase in the number of private individuals pitching in to help families down on their luck.
"We warmly thank all of the thousands of donors who took part in the fundraiser and helped us to share Christmas Cheer," Liisa Partio of MLL said in a statement.
The proceeds of the annual Christmas Cheer fundraiser are used to purchase and distribute food vouchers that recipients can use to purchase groceries from supermarkets belonging to the S-Group, Kesko and Lidl chains.
