Christmas Peace Declared in Turku

The traditional declaration of the Christmas Peace in the city of Turku at 12 noon on Christmas Eve marked the beginning of yuletide celebrations.

Around 15,000 people gathered to hear the address given in both Finnish and Swedish by Turku City manager Jouko K. Lehmusto on the balcony of Brinkkala House in the city's Old great Square.

The tradition of the Christmas Peace dates back to the middle ages. It has been given from the current location since 1886.

Similar Christmas Peace declarations have been revived in other cities. For example, in Tampere it has been delivered from the balcony of the City Hall since 1945.
