Citizens’ initiative on child-related sexual crime sentences to Parliament

The initiative demands that the minimum sentencing for aggravated sexual abuse of a minor should be two years in prison, double the current minimum sentence.

The initiative had gathered 50,083 signatures on Thursday evening, nearly a hundred more than is required for an initiative to be passed to Parliament for consideration.

The citizens’ initiative demands that the current minimum prison sentence for aggravated sexual abuse of a minor should be raised to two years, compared with the current minimum of one year. Minimum sentences of four months are also being demanded for purchase of sexual services from a minor, luring children into performing sexual acts and sexual harassment by use of spreading sexually indecent imagery.

Finnish law obligates Parliament to assess any initiative that gathers more than 50,000 signatures within the space of six months.
